A top purchase for robust collections."― School Library Journal ( Journal) VERDICT Though there may be many 'oohs' and 'yucks' from readers, this may well be a popular title. White print in red boxes adds a great deal to the informative text. Some captions are enlightening, while others repeat information already found in the longer narrative. ![]() Color photos of excellent quality vary in size, including full-page. (Family is permitted to observe the ritual, but tourists are not.) Burial at sea is also mentioned. The author briefly describes 'sky burials,' which often take place in the mountains of Mongolia and Tibet in which a human corpse is offered to the vultures of the Larung Valley. Halls also explains how various sea creatures help remove dead matter form the oceans. Furry animals, such as squirrels, skunks, and raccoons, hunt for their food, but are also willing to enjoy a free carrion meal. ![]() One chapter describes creepy-crawly creatures, such as blowflies, maggots, roly-polys, burying beetles, and meat ants. Halls begins with the death of a wild boar, and describes what and how the process of decomposition takes place. "Readers who enjoy the gross side of life (and death) will find this title to their liking. ![]()

That afternoon she handed me a collection of love letters that Dick had sent to her mother from 1935 – 1952. She very kindly invited me to lunch one afternoon and her fondness and admiration for both Dick and Sheila were evident. I heard nothing for a few weeks, as the address was an old one, but my letter was forwarded and one day I received a call from ‘Putzi’. ![]() Once I had a name for her, I then found an address and wrote to her, explaining that I had found Dick’s journals. Gina married someone else, and her daughter Putzi moved to London in the 1960s and became a regular visitor at Dick and Sheila’s. Gina was American and returned to the States, and Dick’s attentions returned to Sorina, but he often mentioned in his journals how strongly he felt for Gina, and how he felt that he should have married her. ‘Putzi’ was the daughter of a woman called Gina Brennan, who Dick met in 1934 and fell deeply in love with. Looking back through the paperwork that was found with the journals, I realised that I had found a name for someone who Dick always referred to as ‘Putzi’. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() He knows only too well that with each passing hour time is running out. I needed to climb inside the story and I had this story in my ears every spare second I had. From the beginning I was drawn in and Spooner kept me there until the very end. It’s incredibly long but I could not put this down. Spooner doesn’t bring it into modern times or change the era, instead she gives us a brilliant story about another origin for the Robin Hood myth and it is one I will eagerly get behind. I loved every minute of this book, the way the original myth is woven into this retelling is amazing. ![]() ![]() But with a sweep of his green cloak and the flash of her sword, Marian makes the choice to become her own hero: Robin Hood. ![]() Marian never meant to tread in Robin’s footsteps-never intended to stand as a beacon of hope to those awaiting his triumphant return. 6/27/2023 0 Comments Luster raven![]() ![]() ![]() A first chapter is one thing, but how can a debut possibly keep up that level across a whole novel? It was so good I felt like I needed to keep my hopes in check. As well as an immediate original voice and sharp control of a sentence, the chapter had been pacy and witty, too. It was then that I remembered reading the first chapter of Raven Leilani’s Luster online. I scanned rows of books that offered one thing or another. ![]() I love literary fiction with taut lines, but that day I also needed fiction that was instantly transporting, impossible to put down the intimacy of the first-person novels I devoured as a teen but delivered with nuance, surprise. I browsed the bookshop a little listlessly as I really needed a certain kind of good book, but I was aware that my criteria could be tricky to fulfil.
